Text Box: Discovery Club is funded by the Mass Department of Elementary and Secondary Education through a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.
Text Box: Discovery Club is pleased to announce the second annual Mural Project collaboration with Team Haverhill.
This year we are expanding to Consentino, and will have two artists in residence. Ms. Elizabeth Persing will work at Consentino and JG Whittier with the help of each school’s art teacher. At Consentino it will be Ms. Liz Kilday and at JG Whittier it will be Mrs. Bonnie Porter.
The teachers will help students reseach the subject matter of their mural and assist them in making their own mural to take home. Ms. Persing will present her research and mural development techniques, enlightening Text Box: students to her creative process. She will then work with pairs of students on the actual mural. Students will learn how to ’scale-up’ the original idea, sketch it onto the precut mural, and add paint under the artist’s direction.
At Nettle, Mr. Alan Pearsall will work with Mrs. Bev Rigoli and her students. Mr. Pearsall’s techniques differ from Ms. Persing’s and he will teach the students about his process and project development. The students will then help him to put his ideas onto the mural board.
When the murals are finished there will be a public unveiling during Discovery Club hours at one of the three middle Text Box: schools where all murals will be displayed. Invitations will be sent to the families of participants involved in the project.
There will also be a public unveiling downtown at a time and date to be determined. Discovery Club participants and their families will receive notification when the date is secure.
Mrs. Persing and Mr. Pearsall as well as Mrs. Porter have all contributed murals to the community project by Team Haverhill and the Local Cultural Council.

Were you the lucky recipient of a piece of handmade jewelry during the holidays? Students in Discovery Club worked  hard to finish gifts for family and friends before the winter break.

Mr. Parolisi used engaging hands-on activities in Super Science to help students understand concepts and relate them to real world situations, and current school day science curriculum.

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons students had the choice of Cooking, Horticulture, Going Green, Team Sports and Scrapbooking. Cooking with Ms. Spickler and Mrs. Toska is always a popular activity. Students learned basic culinary skills, table manners, food safety and hygiene, and shared recipes from home.

During scrapbooking class Ms. Mikutel taught students to categorize and record important life-events in pleasing page-turning arrangements.

Mrs. Flanagan taught basic Microsoft Office skills and Ms. Sheehan and Mr. Angelo worked on team-building skills in the gym.
